Description

A career-spanning three-disc set that features 50 songs – chosen by Ian Anderson – from all 21 of the band’s studio albums. 50 FOR 50 provides a sweeping overview of Jethro Tull’s rich and diverse catalog, which includes numerous platinum and gold records. Arranged chronologically, the three-disc set highlights the band’s continuous musical evolution with blues-influenced early tracks (“Beggar’s Farm” and “A New Day Yesterday”); heavy rockers (“Aqualung” and “Locomotive Breath”); prog classics (“Skating Away” and “Critique Oblique”); and folk tunes (“Songs From The Wood” and “Heavy Horses.”)

A great compilation of Tull''s catalog, for the most part using the early to mid 2000''s remasters that sound amazing. The glaring omissions in this set are: "To Cry You a Song", "A Passion Play (Extract)", "Crossfire", "Bends Like a Willow" and a shortened version of "Minstrel In The Gallery". "A Christmas Song" is an inferior later version, not the original. On the good side, you get a longer than usual edit of "Thick As A Brick" that is titled "Really Don''t Mind/See There a Son Is Born" that clocks in at 5:01. The liner notes are a good read.

Jethro Tull remastered their tracks many times over the years, but this is a collection of their FINEST remasters. There are a few songs I would have loved to hear on this album, but they''ll probably be on 60 For 60 in nine years, and that''s going to be amazing! I got the MP3, both to save money and for the ability to put all 50 songs on one disc. No, the sound quality is not the best, but it works for playing most of my favorite Tull tracks in the Jeep.

Great collection album. This was a present for my husband, and he loved it. The recordings were clear, and there were a few songs included he actually was not familiar with.

With fifty songs, and the quantity of albums put out by Jethro Tull, there will be songs you may have wished were also included, but overall, they are very good selections. Don''t expect them in chronological order- Ian Anderson arranged them in what he felt was the best order to hear them.

Most of our Jethro Tull CDs did not make in a move six years ago, and it was a real pleasure to hear so many favorites again.

My husband saw them live when he was in college, when they were a relatively young band, and I saw them with him in the late 80s. It was very pleasurable to have those memories evoked.

While the collection doesn''t give you the oceanic concert effect of music pulsing and vibrating your entire body, it is much easier to follow all of the words. I also don''t feel somewhat deafened for a couple hours like I did after exiting the arena.

Get it, and enjoy the wide variety of music they made. You may also find a few songs you weren''t aware of before.

I bought it directly from Amazon, and the entire collection was also provided in mp3 in my Amazon music collection at no extra charge, so I now also have the collection on my phone.

I think this was a great deal and has given my husband a lot of nostalgic pleasure. I got it for Father''s Day for him, and give it to him early because he was reminiscing about some of the songs, and how he wished the CDs hadn''t vanished in our move.

Ian Anderson''s flute playing was as delightful as I remembered.

A cheap cardboard wallet with sleeves, eg, Frank Zappa’s LATHER (which is also really flimsy and crappy, but not as crappy as this) is preferred. A release like this should have been packaged in a digipak. Every single time I receive a cd in a jewel case from Amazon the case is broken and cracked. GRRRRR!!!

With a potential 250 songs to choose from selecting just 50 was never going to be easy (nothing is) and bound to leave some fans disappointed by what was included here and what was left off – so says Ian Anderson in his introduction to this new three CD set. Compiled by Ian Anderson himself – with a certain amount of help from a couple of other Tull experts – this project was co-ordinated by Tim Chacksfield, a man who''s name has appeared on many fine CD reissues and compilations over the years. “50 for 50” by Jethro Tull is not a “Best of” or a “Greatest Hits” from the band, but rather “A Career-Spanning Collection Celebrating Jethro Tull''s 50th Anniversary” - or so it says on the cover, and that is just about right. Some tracks are obviously included, some tracks are very well-known, some tracks are worth discovering and some tracks aren''t – it''s all rather Heavy Horses for courses! The three CDs are packaged in an old-style double jewel case, rather than a fancy fold-out flashy card cover, and included in the box is an informative 24 page booklet. The booklet features an introduction written by Ian Anderson himself, a Tull Story by Martin Webb - which is adapted and updated from the one in the 40th Anniversary tour programme, the sleeve artwork from each Tull album with it''s release date, plus full release details for each track featured including who played on them. The tracks are not compiled in chronological order, but there is a certain logic to the running order which works fine for me, and the tracks are taken from existing remasters rather than being enhanced for this new collection. Currently around fifteen pounds from Amazon (1st June 2018 the CD''s release day) this is a decent value collection that serves as an introduction to the band as well as being a handy Tull playlist for existing fans of the band. As a bit of a bonus you also get the MP3 version AutoRipped to your Amazon Music Library if you purchase the box-set directly from Amazon – rather than via a third-party seller. I am old enough to have bought the album “This Was” on vinyl fifty years ago and although I wasn''t a fan of all the band''s later work there are enough tracks I like a lot included here to make me want to play these CDs quite a few times more. “50 for 50” is a well thought-out and nicely produced collection that does it''s job at a reasonable price – perfect as an introduction or as a decent playlist; five stars for the package at the current price.
